Commanders get strong take on DK Metcalf contract for 13-TD star

The Washington Commanders receive a strong NFL insider take on whether their 13-TD star deserves a contract similar to DK Metcalf.

Terry McLaurin appears to want out of the Washington Commanders after a trade request surfaced last week, but it’s no surprise the team has no intention of moving their No. 1 receiver.

As a result, if Washington don't want to deal the veteran receiver, then both sides need to find common ground and agree on a contract extension. McLaurin has recorded five straight seasons of 1,000 or more receiving yards, and last campaign he produced a career high in touchdowns with 13.

On Tuesday, SI's Albert Breer appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show," and he provided his take on the McLaurin contract standoff. Breer notes that the Commanders shouldn't hesitate to give their star receiver a contract similar to the one that the Pittsburgh Steelers gave DK Metcalf.

"You look at Terry McLaurin. Is he overly reliant on his physical ability? No. He's a great athlete, but he's a craftsman. He's not the type of receiver who, when he loses a step, he's going to fall off a cliff.

"Even if he is 90 percent of what he is now in two years, because of the person he is, because of the leader he is, I have a hard time seeing a scenario where, if the Commanders signed him to the DK Metcalf deal—which is the comp here that his side has tried to use—I have a really hard time seeing what the Commanders are going to regret doing it. You know what I mean?"

As far as the DK Metcalf deal is concerned, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported (h/t Pro Football Rumors) that while portions of the Metcalf accord are indeed on McLaurin’s radar, a matching AAV is not necessarily being sought out.

Nonetheless, the ball is in the Commanders’ court, do they have concerns over McLaurin’s game as he ages or do they just want to have the soon to be 30 year old at a price that best suits the team? It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
