Luis Peña and Jesús Made's Timber Rattlers debut did nothing to slow the hype around them

The Brewers' top two prospects made their High-A debuts and showed why they're considered among the best in the game

The schedule may have kept the Milwaukee Brewers top two prospects from making their Wisconsin debuts in Wisconsin, but the location couldn’t stop the hype train from rolling on.

Jesús Made and Luis Peña made their first appearances since being called up to the Class High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on August 5 in Peoria, Illinois, and did so with a bang.

The two teenage crown jewels of a loaded Brewers farm system both drove in a run with an extra-base hit in a 5-3 Timber Rattlers win, fitting considering the Brewers have moved them along identically at every step of the way since signing as international amateur free agents last January.

Peña’s first High-A at-bat was a memorable one, as he blasted a 2-2 pitch from Peoria left-hander Mason Molina – who was coincidentally the Brewers’ seventh-round pick in last year’s draft – out to left field for a solo home run.

Added power has been at the forefront of Peña’s ascension as a prospect this year, going from breakout Dominican Summer League star last year with questions about his real power and swing decisions to a consensus top prospect in baseball. He is currently listed as the No. 18 prospect in all of the league, according to Baseball America, and a .470 slugging percentage as an 18-year-old at Class A Carolina is a big reason why.

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop prospect Jesus Made walks in the dugout during spring training workouts Monday, February 17, 2025, at American Family Fields of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona.

As it’s often played out with the two stars, Made was quick to ensure he wasn’t outdone by his teammate.

Made, Baseball America’s No. 3 prospect in the league, tripled down the right-field line to cap a 10-pitch at-bat in the seventh inning after striking out in his first two Wisconsin plate appearances.

The swing was a work of art, with the switch-hitting Made keeping his hands back while working from the left side of the plate and lacing the ball on a rope right into the corner, then allowing his speed (he stole 40 bases at Carolina) to do the rest.

Made struck out looking again in his final at-bat of the night, though his triple wound up being the game-winning RBI, while Peña added another walk.

Made also made a superb defensive play with the tying run on base for the final out of the eighth, charging a slow chopper and making a strong throw from the infield grass.

The two will make their home debuts in Grand Chute next Tuesday, Aug. 12
