Commitment analysis: Wisconsin WR C.J. Williams

During the transfer portal cycle, Stanford secured a commitment from Wisconsin transfer wide receiver CJ Williams. Rated a 3-star transfer with a 5.7 Rivals rating, Williams entered the portal as a junior and has one year of eligibility remaining. Coming out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, Williams was a 4-star talent with a 6.0 Rivals rating, making him one of the top receivers in the 2022 recruiting class.

Stanford recruited Williams out of high school and got him on an official visit in June of 2021 but he ultimately committed to USC. After one year at USC, Williams transferred to Wisconsin where he has spent the last two seasons.

For his career, Williams has played in 36 games, totaling 35 receptions for 430 yards and two touchdowns. This past season as a junior, Williams played in 12 games for Wisconsin, totaling 16 receptions for 248 yards and two touchdowns. It was his most productive season to date.

While he hasn’t lived up to his high 4-star billing, Williams is still a very talented receiver who could end up making a real impact for Stanford this season. He looked good in spring ball and in fall camp he seems even more settled in, poised to be the number one receiver on the team. Earlier this week, I saw him catch a nice touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Gulbranson, a grad transfer from Oregon State. Every day he’s getting more and more comfortable in Stanford’s system and being a major focal point of the offense. It’ll be interesting to see how productive he is in a Cardinal uniform and whether or not wide receivers coach Tyler Osborne will be able to help Williams take his game to another level.
