WATCH: Cal OC Bryan Harsin provides insight into ongoing QB battle

Bryan Harsin feels the Bears are moving closer to a quarterback decision heading into the team's first big scrimmage of camp.

Bryan Harsin is inching closer to picking his starting quarterback. Cal is still in the early stages of training camp, but progress is taking place. The first-year Bears offensive coordinator had to make wholesale changes at some positions after the spring.

However, the roster has come together with hope of fitting his style a bit better than when he arrived. Some of the names aren’t as well known, but that isn’t the case for his quarterbacks. Devin Brown and Jaron Sagapolutele have been competing for the starting job since the spring.

Harsin mentioned Tuesday that there is no deadline to prepare for in the spring. So, there isn’t as much pressure to make any type of decision then. EJ Caminong and Dominic Ingrassia also competed with Brown and Sagapolutele in the spring.

For now, it is primarily a two-man race with Sagapolutele saying he is currently splitting reps with Brown.

Harsin wasn’t ready to tip his hand one way or the other when speaking to reporters Tuesday. Instead, he pointed towards this weekend’s scrimmage as a good indicator of who could emerge as the leader.

Brown has experience working on his side while Sagapolutele has flashed his talent quite a bit this offseason.

Harsin isn’t putting too much emphasis on naming a starting quarterback. However, he is aware that a decision will have to come ahead of the opener against Oregon State.

“The depth chart right now, that’s not set,” he said. “It’s not set. And, everybody has a chance to go out there tomorrow and Saturday and compete. We’ll see what happens and then we’ll reevaluate. We’ll put the depth chart up from that point on. Then we’ll see where we go.”
