Maryland running back Nolan Ray has been named to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which honors the nation’s top college football running back, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Monday.
A redshirt sophomore, Ray appeared in all 12 games for the Terrapins during the 2024 season, rushing for 374 yards on 75 carries — nearly 5.0 yards per attempt — while also recording 11 receptions for 76 yards, along with two rushing touchdowns.
Last season Ray logged 53 rushing yards on a career-high 10 carries in Maryland’s road win at Virginia. Later, against USC, he posted 54 yards on six carries to help secure a homecoming win over the Trojans.
Ray joins 103 players on the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list. The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will announce ten semifinalists in November, followed by three finalists later that month. The national winner will be revealed live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12, and is chosen by a committee comprising former All-America and NFL All-Pro running backs, media members, and Hall of Fame award winners.
Ray’s selection offers added excitement for Maryland fans ahead of the season opener as the Terrapins prepare their offense following the departure of Roman Hemby to Indiana. His combination of rushing effectiveness and pass-catching ability has the potential to be a major boon for the Terps this season.
