This can't be easy.
Chicago Sky Coach Gets Honest About Kamilla Cardoso's 'Tough' Situation originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Kamilla Cardoso suffered an injury scare on Friday night as the Chicago Sky suffered a 73-66 loss against the Golden State Valkyries. The 6-foot-7 center was seen grabbing onto her wrist in the fourth quarter, but was able to play through the injury to close out the game.
Cardoso finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 11 rebounds, an assist and one block in 35 minutes of action. That was the 24-year-old’s fifth consecutive double-double as Cardoso continues to be one of the few bright spots amid Chicago’s miserable seven-game losing streak.
Chicago Sky Coach Tyler Marsh Speaks Highly of Kamilla Cardoso
Sky coach Tyler Marsh spoke to reporters after the game, and the first-year shot-caller had nothing but high praise for Cardoso, who once again stepped it up for Chicago in the loss. Marsh spoke honestly about how he feels Cardoso has found herself in a “tough” situation of late.
"I think it's tough sometimes from a player perspective when you're in the midst of losing games the way we have,” he said, via Sky beat reporter Karli Bell on X. “I think she is growing more confident as the game goes but the most important thing to [Cardoso] is pulling out wins.”
After Friday’s loss, the Sky fell to 7-20 on the season. They are 12th in the WNBA and are just 1.5 games ahead of the league-worst Connecticut Sun, who are at 5-21.
Despite Chicago’s struggles this season, Cardoso has been a consistent force, averaging 12.5 points on 52.0% shooting, 8.0 rebounds and 1.6 assist in 25.4 minutes per game.
In fact, she’s worked even harder on the boards during the Sky’s seven-game losing skid. Over this stretch, Cardoso has averaged 10.4 rebounds per contest.
Cardoso Has Carried a Heavier Workload
Cardoso has been without her frontcourt partner, Angel Reese, for a significant part of the aforementioned skid. Reese has sat out four times in the last seven games due to injuries to her leg and back.
Reese has already been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, which only means that Cardoso will need to carry a heavier load for the team once again.
As Marsh said, it can’t be easy for Cardoso to keep on losing despite the hard work she puts in on a nightly basis. Nevertheless, the Brazilian has answered the call game in and game out, and she is expected to do the same on Sunday, win or lose.
