The Michigan Wolverines are into fall camp as the cycle rolls into its second week of action with narratives already taking shape in Ann Arbor. Coordinators Chip Lindsey (offense) and Wink Martindale (defense) spoke to the media over the weekend, followed by a handful of players on Monday.
So how are the narratives being viewed heading into the season compared to last year? TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Clayton Sayfie and Chris Balas discuss the start of fall camp and the narratives that have emerged from the first week.

“[Last season] just was different, as much as they didn’t want it to be or they didn’t want to get word out there that it was, or maybe they just wanted to speak it into existence,” Sayfie said. “They still had an okay team, but it wasn’t quite the same or anywhere near expected for them to actually be the 2023 team in 2024. You start with losing Jim Harbaugh right there, you’re not gonna be the same.
“But there were plenty of other differences from there. This year, you have a quarterback who should be good right away in Bryce Underwood. And that changes everything for what this team is. It showed you last year how important quarterback play is and not being one-dimensional offensively. So you can start right there. But the offensive line sounds like they’re a little bit more comfortable, and that could go a long way as well. It’s really all about the offense.
“The defense, TJ Guy talking about it today, just the way that they’ve started from a much higher point with the continuity, the whole staff is back on that side of the ball. They should be good rocking and rolling right away. I think that defense is gonna give them a hell of a shot to go down to Oklahoma and win. It’s just how much the offense can produce and how quickly they can start producing in this season, because there are two big road games in September. Not every year has those on the schedule, but this year does. So you gotta be ready for it.”
