Germie Bernard is still waiting to hear who will be throwing him passes this season. Alabama has still not named a starting quarterback yet, as Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell still compete for the job. Simpson appears to be the massive favorite but official word has yet to come from head coach Kalen DeBoer.
When asked about the quarterback battle from his perspective, Bernard did not get into specifics. Instead, he focused on how all three have improved throughout the process. High praise from the wide receiver given the circumstances in Tuscaloosa over the past two years.
“I think all three of them have stepped up in a big way,” Bernard said. “It’s never easy going from one coordinator to another, learning new playbooks, and learning new schemes. I’m just very happy that those guys are able to compete but also have that brotherhood to make each other better. I just see each and every one of them growing into their own shells and having confidence in what they do. It’s showing on the field.”
Competition can bring the best out of people. Nobody knows that better than Bernard, who is in an absolutely stacked wide receiver room. Alabama projects to have one of the best pass-catching groups in all of college football. Alongside Bernard are the likes of Ryan Williams and Isaiah Horton, bringing plenty of experience to the field.
Bernard is someone who has been with DeBoer for some time now. He transferred to Alabama from Washington after being a reserve player in the famous 2023 season. The hope was to find a bigger role with the Crimson Tide and break out like other wide receivers did in Seattle.
Progress was made last year, catching 50 passes for 794 yards and two touchdowns from Jalen Milroe. Expectations in 2025 are going to be in even bigger, hoping to reach the century mark in yards and step into the end zone a little more often.
Bernard will step onto the field for the first time on Aug. 30, going up against Florida State in an important nonconference matchup. Conditions from Tallahassee are going to be toasty, only adding to the atmosphere of playing on the road. A tough one is ahead of Alabama in just 26 days, no matter who winds up being the starting quarterback. For now, the trio will continue to battle things out during camp.
