Lindsey's comments on the starting QB race once again stopped short of naming a starter, but the former North Carolina Tar Heels offensive coordinator did offer a window into the team's goals and thought process.

"You always want to know as soon as you can," Lindsey said.

"I mean, that's the goal. I think we have a good plan on competition and getting guys reps. And more than that just getting them reps, putting them in situations. It takes time to do that," Lindsey added.

The new Wolverines offensive boss praised Fresno State Bulldogs transfer Mikey Keene's command of the huddle as well as the veteran qualities possessed by East Carolina transfer Jake Garcia.

The depth in the Wolverines' quarterback room could also include last year's starter Davis Warren, who is working his way back from injury, and freshman Bryce Underwood, whom many have projected as Michigan's starter.

Michigan opens the season on Aug. 30 against New Mexico, a game that could feature multiple quarterbacks as Lindsey and his staff continue to figure out the best combination of players to rely on going forward.
