Cal has hired a new head coach, and once again, the Golden Bears went to find their new leader from the Forty Arces. Texas associate head coach Steve Singleton has accepted the position at Berkeley following Chelsea Spencer’s departure earlier this offseason.
Singleton, who has led hitting development, infield & outfield defense, and is leading the way recruiting-wise, is coming off a national title run with the Longhorns. Singleton joined the Texas coaching staff in the summer of 2019. He previously spent time as a coach at Florida SouthWestern State College and in minor league baseball after his professional baseball career.
Singleton has had a big influence on Texas’ recent wave of All-Americans, including 2024 Softball America Player of the Year Reese Atwood. Singleton also helped the Longhorns have Top-Five recruiting classes for the 2025 and 2026 recruiting windows.
The Oakland native will have plenty of work ahead of him. Although Cal has made three straight NCAA Tournaments, between graduations and transfers, the Golden Bears don’t return any of their qualified statistical hitters and over 90% of their innings from last season.
Meanwhile, Cal alum and interim head coach Jen Deering has helped the Golden Bears land commitments from a handful of transfers, including Emma Jackson (Boston College), Gator Robinson (Boston College), Layna Gerhard (Ohio State), Anya German (Texas Tech), Natalie Marshall (Kansas), Taylor Peacock (San Jose State), Kayla Lee (North Carolina), Madison Rey (Fresno State) and Tamya Waiters (Houston). The Bears also have incoming four-star pitcher Mya McGowan joining the roster.
This will be Singleton’s first experience as head coach at the Division I level.
