West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez liked the competition level on the final day before the players transition to full pads.

“Thought we got a little better today, a little more competitive,” he said.

The veteran head coach believes at times his players looked a little soft in shells but that is because of them not being quite sure on how to thud. That should remedy itself beginning Tuesday with pads.

“We took some steps and there’s a lot of healthy competition at a lot of spots,” he said.

That was on display during the team period of practice as the coaching staff kept score for the offense against the defense and awarded points for winning each play. The hope is that the team naturally keeps that as close as possible and that is what occurred Monday in practice.

So, it was settled by the offensive lineman running goal line patterns against the defensive linemen with the offense emerging victorious.

“O-llinemen run the routes, goal line routes which that took quite a bit of time for them to get there even on the two-yard line and d-line was guarding them and surprisingly we had two o-line made big time SportsCenter highlight catches to win the day,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges in the first year is simply trying to learn the team and what certain players and position groups do well. Inevitably different players have different strengths and the coaches are still in the process of evaluating players to determine what those are for each.

“Everybody’s got a system but you still get somewhat to the strengths of what your players do but we’ve got time, we’ve got time to sort that out,” Rodriguez said.

–Rodriguez was asked about the lawsuit filed by his four players awaiting eligibility waivers in Jimmori Robinson, Tye Edwards, Justin Harrington and Jeff Weimer.

“Outstanding. I’m hopeful. Those guys have been around. They have to workout on their own,” he said. Obviously they will help our program and I know they have attorneys and we’ll see how it goes.”
