New England Patriots' quarterback Drake Maye had not thrown an interception through the Patriots' first seven days of training camp, but he showed his first blemish in Friday night's scrimmage.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is entering his second year in the NFL and looking to make a big jump from his rookie season. Although the 4-13 record doesn't show it, Maye had a solid rookie year considering what was around him.
Maye threw for 2,276 yards in 12 starts and collected 17 total touchdowns while throwing 10 interceptions. This offseason, he's worked on his development as a passer and his leadership skills.
To help Maye in year two, the Patriots added two receivers and two offensive linemen, and drafted a receiver, running back, and two more offensive linemen. All of New England's offseason additions should make their presence felt in 2025 as they're all competing for starting positions in training camp.
To start training camp, Maye had looked really good. The second-year quarterback had gone through the first seven practices without an interception and had connected on numerous deep passes in the end zone.
However, it's difficult to judge performances early on in training camp. The Patriots had their first scrimmage Friday night at Gillette Stadium, and Maye struggled a bit, showing his first blemishes of 2025.
Maye finished the night going 9-18 with a touchdown and two interceptions in a loss for the Blue Team. The young quarterback's first interception came on the second drive of the game. On a pass intended for receiver Stefon Diggs, cornerback Kobee Minor tipped the pass, and it was intercepted by linebacker Robert Spillane, who later recovered a fumble as well.
“We called man-to-man defense,” Spillane said (h/t Masslive.com). “I ended up being a low-hole help player. Made a great play – our corner on the ball tipped it up and I was able to get underneath it and scoop it.”
On the Blue Team's next drive, running back Rhamondre Stevenson lost a fumble, which was recovered by Spillane.

Maye's second interception came on the final drive of the game. Playing in the two-minute drill, Maye threw a pass intended for rookie receiver Kyle Williams. Cornerback Alex Austin jumped the pass and intercepted it, and would've run it in for the score if he hadn't slid to essentially end the scrimmage.
Although Maye sputtered for the first time during training camp on Friday night with the two interceptions, he was under pressure for most of the night and did have a highlight play.

Blue Team's first drive ended with a 32-yard touchdown strike to Williams off a trick play. Maye threw the ball backward to Stevenson, who tossed it back to his quarterback, who hit Williams in the end zone for the score.
While Maye is no longer perfect in training camp, the young quarterback can learn from Friday's scrimmage. The Patriots have Saturday and Sunday off before they prepare for their first game week, as they'll open their preseason on Friday against the Washington Commanders.
