During the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox failed to trade for a top starting pitcher. Boston needed to add another big-time arm behind ace Garrett Crochet.
The Red Sox decided to trade for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May, who has a 4.85 ERA this season. May wasn't the top starting pitching candidate the Red Sox fans thought they would end up with.
Now Boston will have to wait for the 2026 offseason to upgrade the starting pitching depth. There will be a handful of top starting pitchers on the open market next season, and Rick McNair from Fansided thinks the team could sign Houston Astros pitcher Framber Valdez.
"Framber Valdez will be a prime target for those with an open pocketbook, which is questionable with the Red Sox," McNair wrote. "I would expect Valdez to get a Crochet-type deal, but probably not with Boston. Could it be?"
Valdez, a two-time All-Star in 2022 and 2023, could be a nice option for the Red Sox. The 31-year-old pitcher is on the final year of his one-year, $18 million deal.

The Red Sox need to add another top starting pitcher this winter, and Valdez could bring his World Series experience over to a team that is looking to win their first Fall Classic since 2018.
