Jaguars camp report from practice No. 9. Team entering a game-week scenario with Steelers coming to town.
The Jacksonville Jaguars' defense gave up six big plays of 20 yards or longer during the scrimmage in EverBank Stadium on Aug. 1, five of them passes and two given up by the first-team defense.
The unit came back during a training camp session on Aug. 3 at the Miller Electric Center, intercepting two passes, forcing a fumble on another completion and defensing six passes in all.
Rookie linebacker Jack Kiser took one of the picks, against Nick Mullens, back for the first defensive touchdown of training camp.
Jaguars quarterbacks completed nearly 70 percent of their passes in the scrimmage. The defense brought that down a bit on Aug. 3, to 65 percent.
Jaguars training camp report
No. 9, Aug. 3
Duration: One hour, 45 minutes, helmets and spiders (small shoulder pads).
Conditions: 79 degrees, heat index 85 degrees, 89 percent humidity to start; 84 degrees, heat index 90 degrees, 78 percent humidity at the end.
Injuries: Tight ends Hunter Long (ankle) and Johnny Mundt (lower body) returned to practice, although Mundt wore the orange injury jersey and was limited. … Also returning was running back Bhayshul Tuten (hamstring), who had one rep in team periods and offensive guard Patrick Mekari (back). … Defensive tackle Arik Armstead (back) remains limited from team periods and was working on conditioning on the side.
Jaguars offense notes
- Trevor Lawrence completed 11 of 19 passes and three touchdowns during red-zone team periods. Mullens was 8 of 12, John Wolford 3 of 4 and Seth Henigan 4 of 5. Lawrence hit Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr., and Hunter Long with the TDs.
- Thomas dropped two passes, including one in which he was wide-open over the middle. Hunter and tight end Brenton Strange had one each.
- Tuten had only one rep in a team periods but it was a good one: he took a short pass from Mullens and juked a defender to get into the clear.
- Long, who had been out with an ankle injury, had perhaps his best day in camp with three catches and a touchdown.
- During a period in which wide receivers went against cornerbacks 1-on-1 inside the 10, Hunter had two TDs against Jourdan Lewis.
Jaguars defense notes
- It was hard to pick out the intended receiver on Kiser’s pick six but the best guess is that Mullens badly underthrew a pass to tight end Quintin Morris.
- Wingard’s interception was notable in that Lawrence’s pass from the 5-yard line in a red-zone period bounced off Hunter’s hands, the first drop he’s had in training camp.
- Other pass break-ups were by Tyson Campbell, Lewis, Deneiko Slaughter and Zechariah McPhearson.
- In the 1-on-1 drill between wide receivers and cornerbacks, Christian Braswell and Slaughter had break-ups. On one rep, Lawrence didn’t even throw the ball because Slaughter had Cam Camper covered so well. McPhearson also dragged Eli Pancol down at the 1-yard line after giving up the catch.
Jaguars special-teams notes
- Kicker Cam Little connected on two attempts under live conditions, from 42 and 45 yards, and made two conversions. Under a live rush in camp, Little is 16 of 18 (88.9 percent).
