Dallas had one too many players.
The Dallas Wings made headlines on Sunday by trading away DiJonai Carrington.
In the aftermath of the deal, which brought back Diamond Miller and Karlie Samuelson, the Wings had to clear some roster space.
To do so, they waived Teaira McCowan, according to ESPN's Alexa Philippou.
It's a bit of a surprising move, but the Wings are clearly looking to refresh their identity.
McCowan is a 6-foot-7 former No. 3 overall pick out of Mississippi State. For a time, it seemed she would be a star in the WNBA.
She began her career with three seasons in Indiana. In those years, she averaged 10.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.
McCowan has spent the past four campaigns with the Wings. For the first three, she was a regular starter, but she had yet to start a game for Dallas this season.
In four seasons with the Wings, McCowan played 119 games (82 starts) with 10.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
This season, coming off the bench, those averages had dropped to 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds.
She's a career 55.3% shooter from the field.
The Wings are looking toward the future, so this move must be viewed through that lens. McCowan clearly wasn't a part of their long-term plans.
Maybe the most interesting aspect here, though, is that now McCowan is available. Another team can pick her up off waivers, or sign her as a free agent if she clears waivers.
There's likely a contender out there who wouldn't mind taking a shot on a talented 6-foot-7 interior presence. McCowan likely won't be available for long.
