Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Wedson Nyirenda has shared his thoughts on Nasreddine Nabi’s tenure at the club and gave his verdict on how the Tunisian mentor will fare ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.
The Soweto giants missed out on a top eight spot for the second successive season, having registered a ninth-place finish in the Betway Premiership last season. In the 2023/24 term, Chiefs recorded a 10th place finish, their worst-ever in PSL history.Despite the opportunity to compete for the first piece of silverware eluding them, Amakhosi are set for a sensational return to continental football as they secured their CAF Confederation Cup ticket by lifting the Nedbank Cup title at the expense of rivals Orlando Pirates in May.
Nyirenda praises Nabi's work at Kaizer Chiefs !
“First and foremost, I congratulate coach Nasreddine Nabi and his technical team, the players, the board, supporters, Dr. Kaizer Motaung and everyone at Naturena for breaking the 10 years trophyless jinx,” Nyirenda told Foot Africa in an exclusive interview.
With the trophy drought over, Nyirenda says a team of Chiefs’ stature should be walking away with a minimum of one trophy every season. Moreover, the Zambian tactician urged the Glamour Boys to instill strong mentality in their mindset, with the gruesome Confederation Cup looming.
“For a glamourous team like Amakhosi, it is taboo not to walk away with any trophy in any season. As they return to the continental showpiece, they will be facing a bigger challenge, hence the need for strong mentality and resolve,” he added.

While Chiefs managed to win a title in Nabi’s debutseason, results in the league have been inconsistent and underwhelming. However, Nyirenda is adamant that the former Young Africans mentor can turn things around and bring back glory days at Naturena.
“Nabi will now work on the league prospects, work on improving performances in the league. Like every other coach with support, Nabi can turn things around for the better,” continued Nyirenda, who guided Baroka FC to the 2018 Telkom Knockout title against Pirates.Nabi’s charges will kickstart the new season with a Betway Premiership clash against Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium. It remains to be seen how Chiefs will fare this season, having bolstered the squad with new faces.
Chiefs lured South African-born attacking midfielder Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva from Persebaya Surabaya of Indonesia, Nkanyiso Shinga from Portuguese top-flight club FC Alverca, Siphesihle Ndlovu from the now-defunct SuperSport United and former Pirates duo, Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane.
