Knicks a 'Realistic' Destination For Former 76ers Star: Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Knicks have been named a potential destination for a former Philadelphia 76ers star, according to NBA insider Ian Begley.
The New York Knicks had two key acquisitions this offseason, Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele. Clarkson was signed to a one-year deal after finalizing a contract buyout with the Utah Jazz. Yabusele, meanwhile, signed a two-year, $11.275 million deal.
Even after solidifying their bench unit, the Knicks look to add another player to their roster. One player who has been linked to them the entire summer has been guard/forward Ben Simmons. The former Philadelphia 76ers star remains an unrestricted free agent after his brief stint with the Los Angeles Clippers.
An NBA Insider Says It's 'Realistic' For the Knicks to Sign Ben Simmons
Simmons hasn't been the same star player as he once was with the Philadelphia 76ers. After moving on from the Knicks' rival, the Australian guard has regressed and even appeared in fewer games.
Still, he can make an impact as a reserve due to his size and ability to facilitate. NBA insider Ian Begley answered X user @2lowtech, who asked if Simmons is a realistic option for the Knicks' final veteran spot.
"Ben Simmons is certainly a candidate for the Knicks’ final roster spot. As of earlier this week, New York continued to show strong interest in signing Simmons as teams in on Simmons await his decision," Begley answered.
Gone are the days when Simmons is earning money like an All-Star. Since he was bought out by the Brooklyn Nets last season, his value has decreased, and he could likely be signed to a veteran minimum deal moving forward.
Last season, the three-time All-Star appeared in 51 games for both the Nets and Clippers. He averaged five points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists for the two teams he played for. Joining the Knicks won't guarantee that he'll get playing time since they have a good number of players who will be part of the backcourt.
