When it comes to Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule, his teams historically make the biggest jump in the third year of his tenure.

He went from six wins to 10 during his days at Temple, and went from seven wins to 11 during his Baylor tenure. After posting a 7-6 record in 2024, college football analyst and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy thinks that the Cornhuskers can put together a solid season in 2025.

Greg McElroy Predicts an Improved Record for Nebraska

With some of their most difficult games being played at Memorial Stadium, McElroy thinks that the schedule works in favor of Rhule and the Huskers.

"Let's go to the schedule," McElroy said. "Penn State at home, (U)SC at home, Michigan at home. Pretty good spot to start. You get their three, maybe your toughest games are all at home. You go to UCLA, to Minnesota, you get Iowa at home, Cincinnati's at home. I think this team has a chance to have a really nice record, but they got to play well there in Lincoln."

Nebraska's Record at Home Under Rhule

Although Nebraska has a combined record of 12-13 in Rhule's first two seasons, the Huskers have found most of their success when playing at home. Nebraska has posted a 9-5 record when playing at Memorial Stadium, meaning that teams struggle to go into what is one of the most hostile environments in college football and come out with a victory.

Given that they play a couple of their toughest opponents, such as USC and Michigan, at home, the Cornhuskers could be due for some upset wins.

Rhule Needs a Good Season

While he may not be on the hot seat just yet, if Nebraska underwhelms again in 2025, the pressure will be turned all the way up on Rhule. While last year's 7-6 record was the program's best record since 2016, Rhule doesn't necessarily need to make the playoffs to stay off the hot seat. However, competing against top teams and staying in the mix in the Big Ten may prevent the hot seat chatter before it even begins.
