Official | FC Köln sign “future leader” Jan Thielmann to contract extension

Linked with a move elsewhere this summer, FC Köln’s Jan Thielmann will be remaining put at the only German footballing club he’s ever represented. Köln confirmed a contract extension for the fullback/winger on Saturday. Thielmann’s new working papers with the newly promoted Bundesliga side runs until 2028.

Thielmann – a Rheinland-Pfalz native – moved to the Köln academy from Eintracht Trier in 2017. Thielmann made his professional debut for die Geißböcke in December 2019 at the age of 17. Since then, he’s amassed a great deal of experience.

Despite being only 23 years-of-age (and still representing the Germany U21s), Thielmann has 110 German top flight appearances under his belt. Thielmann has netted an impressive eight Bundesliga goals over the course of five seasons in the German top division.

Köln’s current squad captain Timo Hübers sits on an expiring contract. So too does Thielmann’s close friend and Germany U21 captain Eric Martel. Köln management made clear that this contract extension was aimed at handing Thielmann a greater leadership role, and possibly the armband, in the future.

In our eyes, Jan embodies much of what we want 1. FC Köln to be in the future,” club sporting director Thomas Kessler noted in a statement accompanying the news. “Despite being only 23-years-old, he already has impressive experience. We are convinced that Jan still has more potential to offer. We hope that his character and mentality will enable him to take on more and more responsibility in the coming years and assume a leadership role in our team.“

FC is my club and Köln is my home,” the player himself added. “After last year’s relegation, I made a conscious decision to remain here and turn things around. We reached the goal of returning to the Bundesliga. I am very proud of that. Now I want to take the next step at FC and take on even more responsibility so that FC can play consistently in the Bundesliga over the next few years.
