Son Heung-min set to leave Spurs as LAFC move gathers pace

The South Korean star is in talks over a move to LAFC, with the MLS side pushing for a deal.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has informed the club of his desire to leave this summer, with Los Angeles FC pushing to secure a deal for the South Korean forward.

The 33-year-old, who has spent a decade at Spurs, held talks with new head coach Thomas Frank earlier this summer and is understood to have expressed his wish to leave on a high after leading the club to a European trophy in May.

Son has enjoyed a prolific spell in north London, scoring 173 goals and providing 101 assists across 454 appearances.

He was the first Asian player to reach 100 Premier League goals and won the Golden Boot in 2022.

Sources have indicated that Son was the only senior player to express an interest in moving on during Frank's early conversations with the squad. Los Angeles is seen as his most likely destination, with MLS side LAFC showing strong interest.

The club already has former Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on its books, and a move to California would place Son in the heart of the largest Korean community in the United States.

The presence of global stars such as Lionel Messi at Inter Miami has only added to the growing profile of Major League Soccer, and Son is said to be keen on playing a leading role in that next phase of growth.

Meanwhile, Spurs are hopeful of signing Joao Palhinha on loan after opening talks with Bayern Munich over the Portugal midfielder.

Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham last summer in a deal worth up to £47.4m ($62.9m) and is keen on returning to the Premier League after falling out of favour at the Allianz Arena.
