Columbus Crew have one point toward the Leagues Cup rankings following a loss in PKs vs Toluca, and are looking to gain three more vs. Club Puebla.
The Crew put themselves in a hole after failing to win against Toluca FC in the first game of the Leagues Cup group stage. Now, they're looking to make up ground in their matchup against Club Puebla on Aug. 1.
Despite the Crew holding a 2-0 advantage going into the final 20 minutes of regulation against Toluca, the Liga MX squad came back to force a penalty kick shootout. The Crew fell in the shootout 4-2, giving them only one point toward the tournament standings for recording a tie in regulation.
With two games yet to be played in the group stage, the Crew are behind 10 other MLS teams in the standings.
"It’s kind of a new, different feeling," Crew midfielder Max Arfsten said. "Most games, you don’t go into PKs and still be alive in the tournament, so to speak. But we can still advance; it’s a true statement. So, we’re just going to ride with that."
Only the top four teams in points earned from each league move on to the knockout rounds. The Crew can pick up six points if they win the next two games.
