Cowboys' Jerry Jones reportedly attempted to sidestep Micah Parsons' agent in nine-figure offer

Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys are officially at the end of the road. The Cowboys decision makers thought they were going to be able to get a deal done behind Parsons' agent's back.

There’s no doubt that Micah Parsons is one of the best in the world at getting to the opposing quarterback. However, the Cowboys have chosen not to give him the extension he wants. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the situation may have become personal.

“This sounds different to me. This sounds a little bit more personal from both sides. It sounds like Dallas is upset with the fact it felt like it was getting closer to a deal and that deal went sideways. And I think Micah Parsons feels like this deal should have been done,” Schefter said.

The root of the issue appears to be a misunderstanding involving Jerry Jones and Parsons' agent. Jones believed he had reached a deal directly with Parsons, without the involvement of his agent. When Parsons' agent later reached out to formally negotiate, Jones reportedly didn’t appreciate it.

“The team believed those conversations were negotiations and that it had a deal, multiple league sources said,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini wrote. “But Parsons believed the talks were just conversations and wanted his agent to handle the negotiations. When his agent attempted to start negotiations, the Cowboys declined to engage with him and told the pass rusher that they believed they already had a deal. Now, the team is refusing to engage with Parsons' agent at all, creating a tense standoff amid increasing friction.”

Just a few hours after this information surfaced, Parsons made an official post requesting a trade from the Cowboys. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the team had intended to offer Parsons a nine-figure deal without going through his agent.

“The fact that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys believe they can negotiate a 9-figure extension with Micah Parsons without involving his agent says everything about the current state of the franchise. This entire situation is laughable from the Dallas side. It could’ve — and should’ve — been avoided. But instead, the Cowboys’ operated with pure arrogance, foolishness and stubbornness,” Schultz posted.

It’s astonishing that the Cowboys thought they could get a deal done without involving an agent. That decision was shortsighted and is ultimately the reason they’re now facing a significant hole in their edge rushing unit. Now, they’re forced to trade a player who genuinely wanted to stay in Dallas for the next chapter of his career.
