Red Sox 'Closely Monitoring' Marlins' Sandy Alcantara as Trade Deadline Looms

The Boston Red Sox's primary need at the trade deadline is another starting pitcher. Ace Garrett Crochet is in the thick of AL Cy Young contention, but to spare his arm, the team pushed back his next start to Monday. Whether that is due to Boston believing a trade acquisition will take his place in the rotation remains to be seen, but the club has been active in its pursuit of a playoff-caliber arm.

While Boston’s interest in both Arizona Diamondbacks starters, Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen, is no secret, the team has been “closely monitoring” Miami Marlins’ ace Sandy Alcantara for the past two months, according to MLB insider Francys Romero.

Alcantara began the season looking like a shell of his former Cy Young-winning self. Yet, his two post-All-Star game starts have given teams hope he is starting to turn the corner.

Since July 23, Alcantara has given up seven hits, struck out eight batters, and allowed zero earned runs through 12 innings. Although a small sample size, it is a promising result from the high-upside starter.

The success has also prompted the Marlins to raise their asking price. According to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, Miami wants “two elite prospects” and more in return for Alcantara. It is a justifiable position for the Marlins, especially with the 29-year-old under team control through the 2027 season.

The Red Sox could feasibly pull off the deal, but it is unknown if chief baseball officer Craig Breslow wants to mortgage any part of the team’s future for Alcantara’s services. However, McAdam adds that, "according to someone with knowledge of the talks, was: “Don’t move him without checking back with us.”

With less than 24 hours remaining until Thursday’s 6 pm ET deadline, Jon Heyman of the New York Post gives Alcantara a 50-50 chance to get traded. If the Red Sox are serious about acquiring the right-hander, the clock is ticking to get a deal done.
