This fifth-round draft pick has surprised as top Eagles rookie in training camp

The Georgia pipeline to Philadelphia continues to thrive.

The Philadelphia Eagles celebrated when an SEC linebacker fell to them at the end of the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Super Bowl champions felt they had a steal in former Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell. While Campbell impressed by returning earlier than expected from a shoulder injury to take the field on Day 1 of training camp, he has not been the most impressive Eagles rookie so far.

That honor goes to a fellow former SEC linebacker from Georgia, Smael Mondon, according to Delaware Online Eagles insider Martin Frank.

"For now, that honor belongs to Smael Mondon, the Eagles' fifth-round pick out of Georgia, and it went beyond Mondon getting the vast majority of first-team reps in practice on Aug. 1, while Campbell was mostly with the second unit," Frank wrote. "Mondon made perhaps one of the nicest plays of camp by any defender through six training camp practices so far."

Both Mondon and Campbell have gotten plenty of reps so far in camp due to an injury to Eagles returning inside linebacker Zach Baun. Mondon has emerged as a potential option as a three-down contributor.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has gone heavy on Georgia prospects in the last few drafts. Other former Georgia Bulldogs on the Eagles roster include Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, Nakobe Dean, Kelee Ringo, Azeez Ojulari, and Lewis Cine.

Mondon led the 2022 national-champion Georgia team in tackles with 76. Last fall, he had 57 tackles and three sacks in 10 games. The Dallas native was a five-star recruit out of Paulding County High School.
