Chiefs' former signing retires from football at age 24 to play rugby

The pitch calls.

The Kansas City Chiefs were the NFL team that initially gave Louis Rees-Zammitt a chance.

The Chiefs signed him out of the NFL's International Player Pathway program in 2024.

But about a year later, Rees-Zammitt has announced his retirement from professional football. He's returning to Europe to continue his promising rugby career.

Rees-Zammitt had been with the Jaguars at the end of last season and into this summer, but now he's done with football.

"I've decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby," wrote Rees-Zammit in a social media post. "It's been a great experience, but it's time to come home. I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. It's been a great experience, but it's time to come home. I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. I can't explain how excited I am!"

Rees-Zammitt has been hurt during training camp this summer with a lower back injury. That didn't help his already slim chances of making the Jags' roster.

He's a fantastic rugby player, with 32 international caps for Wales.

Now, he gets to return to the sport he really loves.

"There’s only one thing that’s on my mind, that’s coming back to rugby and doing what I do best," Rees-Zammit wrote. "I can’t explain how excited I am. There’ll be more news to come soon but for now, see you soon rugby fans.”
