Tyler Mawhinney, Charlie Woods match 66s in third round of Junior PGA but trail Lunden Esterline

Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island posted a 66 in the third round of the Junior PGA of July 31 to remain in contention.

Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island and Charlie Woods of Jupiter both shot 66 to remain in contention in the third round of the Junior PGA Championship on July 31 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.

But they've got a long way to go to catch Lunden Esterline of Andover, Kan.

Mawhinney birdied four of his first eight holes, then bounced back from his only bogey of the day at the Ackerman-Allen Course at No. 11 to play his last seven holes with a clean card and is tied for fourth at 11-under-par 203.

Woods, the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, birdied four of his first seven holes, then dropped birdie putts on three of his last five and moved into a tie for second at 12-under 202 with Penson Badgett (67) of Pilot Mountain, N.C.

Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island shot 66 on July 31 in the third round of the Junior PGA Championship to finish at 11-under-par 203 and in a tie for fourth place.

However, Lunden Esterline of Andover, Kan., continues to dominate the boys division and with a 66, has a seven-shot lead over Woods at 19-under-par 195. Esterline had his second bogey-free round in a row and hasn't made a bogey in his last 41 holes in the tournament.

Third round delayed two hours

A storm system forced tournament officials to delay tee times by two hours and Woods and Mawhinney weren't finished until after 8:30 p.m.

However, the delay didn't seem to bother either one as Woods birdied his first two holes and Mawhinney three of his first five.

If Esterline holds on, second place still brings a perk: The top two players will earn invitations to the Junior Ryder Cup Sept. 23-25 at the Nassau Country Club and Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Luke Balaskiewicz has another steady day

Luke Balaskiewicz of Jacksonville posted his third under-par round with a 68 and is tied for ninth at 9-under. He birdied two of his last three holes. Balaskiewicz, who will enroll this fall at the University of North Florida, is playing in his final junior tournament.

Sahana Chokshi of Jacksonville, a rising junior at Episcopal, made the 36-hole cut on the 1-over number and, after a bogey on her first hole in the third round, didn't make another on her way to a 66. Chokshi has six birdies and easily made the 54-hole cut. At 3-under 211, she is tied for 15th.
