One of the top defenders in the country is headed to Eugene. Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul’s Episcopal five-star EDGE Anthony Jones has committed to Oregon over Alabama and Texas A&M.
“The process was tough,” Jones told Rivals. “I took my time, stayed humble, and listened to the people I trust.
“I have had this feeling about Oregon for a while now, and the relationships were strong, and it just came down to that gut feeling.”
Jones visited Oregon multiple times and the visits got better and better. He got more comfortable and he found the place he wants to be.
“What I love most about Oregon is the coaching staff, how they run an NFL-style defense, and overall fit in the scheme.
“Coach Lupoi and Coach Lanning have a real history of developing edge guys. They are great defensive coaches and they have a lot of experience. They make me feel like part of the team already.”
Though the No. 22 prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking grew up an Alabama fan, Jones said the Ducks kept growing on him. The distance and new environment in Eugene actually helped seal the decision.
“It’s different, but that’s what I need,” Jones said. “It’ll make me uncomfortable—in a good way. That’ll push me to work even harder and to be better. Oregon is a different place, but I love the scenery, the weather, and how it feels when I am there.
“I grew up an Alabama fan and I never thought I would go to Oregon when all of this started, but it is about the relationships, the vision, and the feeling I have about the coaches.
“I see it as a great fit for me. Oregon is a place I can help win a national championship.”
