Ohio State makes announcement.

The season opener against the Texas Longhorns is only weeks away, and Ohio State Buckeyes fans can’t contain their excitement. Ryan Day has kept the quarterback competition going, with no clear starter as of now. Aside from that, other units look strong, and evidence of that has already begun to emerge.

On Monday, Jeremiah Smith was named to the Maxwell Award watch list. He is ranked as the No. 1 receiver in this season’s corps by ESPN. He was part of last season’s championship‑winning team and hopes to replicate that success. On Tuesday, the program announced even more good news.

Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles have both been added to the Bronko Nagurski Award watch list. Downs is ranked No. 1 among defensive backs by ESPN. His stats from last season include 82 tackles, six passes defended and two interceptions.

The Buckeyes currently hold the ninth position in On3's team recruiting ranking with only one five-star. But Day's camp is pushing hard to get that number to two.

Bralan Womack, a product of the Hartfield Academy, has kept Ohio State in his final four and a commitment date is close.

Chad Simmons of On3 writes, "Intel suggests the Aggies have faded and that the Gators are working to hang in this. That leaves Auburn and Ohio State – the SEC vs. Big Ten – for the five-star safety."

"We are not ruling out Florida and Texas A&M, but the Tigers and Buckeyes have the momentum with Womack’s commitment set for Aug. 21," Simmons continued. "Both programs feel they are in a good spot but the buzz around Auburn has picked up in the last couple of weeks.

"Ohio State was the leader in the spring and was heading into summer visits. This race has been going back and forth and could continue to do that as we inch closer to the commitment."
