There's a lot of excitement surrounding the Florida Gators entering the 2025 season, with one of the biggest reasons being star quarterback DJ Lagway, who will be in his sophomore year.

However, throughout the offseason, things haven't been going as planned, and on Monday, On3's Zach Abolverdi reported that the quarterback suffered a calf injury last week and has since been seen wearing a boot.

Lagway's Practice Status Up in the Air

A development like this is something that Florida wants to avoid, and during a Tuesday appearance on "McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning," insider Dave Waters provided some insight on whether Lagway will be good to go for fall practice.

"The team reports today for fall camp, practice starts tomorrow, you’re hoping DJ Lagway’s out there because he does miss spring practice,” Waters said. “We’ll get more from Billy Napier today and hopefully he can shed more light on it, but certainly, it does sound like he might be limited to start fall camp. Maybe a week or two and we’ll see how much that impacts Florida.”

Facing an injury like this could throw a wrench in the plan to improve on an impressive first season, where he was named a Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American.

The Injuries for Lagway Are Piling Up

For Florida fans, reports of Lagway sustaining injuries are starting to become increasingly common, as he was already dealing with a shoulder issue throughout the spring.

"For the entirety of spring practice, Lagway was unable to throw, instead just taking dropbacks and handing off the ball," CBS Sports' Austin Nivison wrote.

Considering he is just 19 years old and entering his second season at the collegiate level, these kinds of injuries become more and more concerning and leave questions about his durability.

Heisman Trophy Hopes Could Be Affected

Of course, going into the season, Lagway is facing some tremendously high expectations, with ESPN even putting him at No. 5 when listing 10 early Heisman Trophy candidates.

However, not being able to be a full participant with his teammates nearly one month before the season opener against the Long Island Sharks on Aug. 30 can severely affect his ability to be prepared and perform at a high level.
