Rams-Packers trade pitch sends $5M dual-threat QB with big upside to LA as Matthew Stafford's heir

The Green Bay Packers already have Jordan Love. Their back Malik Willis is on an expiring contract and could very well be on his way out just like a proposed trade has him.

The Green Bay Packers are heading into a season where anything could happen. The defense has several questions to answer, but the offense is loaded with weapons. Still, the success of the season hinges entirely on Jordan Love.

“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” SI’s Albert Breer wrote.

Love has one of the league’s more intriguing backups in Malik Willis. Last year, Willis stepped up when Love went down with an injury. Bleacher Report’s Kevin Knox recently predicted that the Los Angeles Rams could explore trading for Willis.

“The Rams should have some interest in Willis as a potential heir to Stafford. While his play style is different than Stafford's, he's flashed in a LaFleur offense that is similar to McVay's—LaFleur was the Rams' offensive coordinator in 2017,” Knox wrote.

With Matthew Stafford getting older, adding Willis wouldn’t be a bad move. Stafford entered training camp dealing with a bad back and is questionable for Week 1.

“And rushing him back, where he could potentially have an unnecessary setback, that just does not make sense. We (The Rams) are fortunate to have the luxury of a player like him, that you do not minimize the importance of practices, but this is the best thing for him and for our football team,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said.

Willis is still young and simply needs another opportunity to prove he can be a franchise quarterback. Los Angeles could offer him just that. A new environment and a fresh start could pay dividends for a player like Willis.
