In the event Manchester United fail to get a deal over the line for Benjamin Sesko, it’s expected they’ll test Aston Villa’s resolve for Ollie Watkins.

For some fans (and Ruben Amorim), the Villa talisman is their preferred option due to his hugely impressive Premier League record. In a United team that managed to score a measly 44 goals last season, Watkins could be a transformative addition.

Yet, it’s such prolific form that’s also made his club unwilling to part ways. Watkins is contracted to Villa Park until 2028, meaning they’re technically in no rush to sell, but may be cornered into sanctioning his exit if it looks as though he wants to embark on a new venture after five years in the West Midlands.

It seems as though Villa are, however, making plans behind the scenes to sanction a centre-forward’s arrival in case their arms are twisted into selling their main man.

Two weeks ago, they were linked with Porto’s £69 million-valued star Samu Aghehowa, prompting speculation over Watkins’ future as Unai Emery’s first-choice No.9.

CaughtOffside are also now of the belief that the Villans are sizing up a move for RB Leipzig’s Lois Openda, with sources expecting he’ll cost around £51.8m this summer window.

As things stand, the Reds are prioritising Sesko’s arrival, although they do face stern competition from Newcastle United, who’ve made it clear to Leipzig they will pay whatever it takes to sign the Slovenian after missing out on a host of their top targets already.

Sesko, 22, is open to joining United irrespective of the fact that they have no European football on the horizon in 2025/2026, which comes as a significant blow to the Magpies’ bargaining position.
