Representing the North Shore of Hawaii, Julian Williams will compete in the Challenger Series on Wednesday, July 31, in Huntington Beach.
There’s no doubt that Hawaii breeds extraordinary surfing talent and one of them is about to make his WSL Challenger Series debut at the 2025 LEXUS US Open of Surfing. Julian Williams’ skills make him a standout in any lineup, whether in Hawaii or his current home of Southern California. He is the first Black and Native Hawaiian surfer to earn a wildcard entry into the Challenger Series and will be competing on Wednesday, July 31, in Huntington Beach.
After a delay due to the Tsunami advisory that was in effect for much of the Pacific, Williams will face off in Heat 4 thanks to wildcard selection from A Great Day in the Stoke (AGDITS) – a first-of-its-kind competition and cultural surf festival that celebrates Black surf culture, amplifies Black surf talent from around the world, and builds inclusivity in the water.

His debut marks a historic moment for professional surfing, where Black surfers remain vastly underrepresented at the highest levels. Julian comes from the fabled North Shore of Oʻahu and was mentored by none other than the late Buttons Kaluhiokalani.
David Mesfin, director of the documentary film “Wade In The Water”, explains, “For young surfers of color, Julian isn’t a distant star—he’s accessible, authentic, and proof that you can honor your heritage while breaking barriers.”
Julian embraces Black surf culture with humility and pride. That’s what makes him powerful—he surfs with purpose.

His arrival on the elite competitive circuit is a testament to his passion, perseverance, skill, and creativity. Through his participation in AGDITS and the support of its founder, award-winning travel host Nathan Fluellen, he’ll get a well-earned shot in the Challenger Series.
Fluellen says, “Surfing has long lacked visible Black representation at the elite level. Julian’s wildcard is a watershed moment, signifying a shift in how talent is discovered, supported and celebrated. It represents AGDITS’ mission to identify, elevate and champion Black surf talent on the world stage and we are so proud of his historic achievement. His versatility across surf disciplines sets him apart as one of the most promising athletes in the next generation of surf talent.”
“My dream of not only competing but showcasing my hard work and dedication to the sport is becoming a reality, thanks to Lexus and Nate with A Great Day in the Stoke. I'm incredibly grateful and beyond excited for this opportunity—not just for myself, but for the chance to help open more doors for others like me,” said Williams.
Julian Williams isn’t just riding waves—he’s carrying the weight of generations, representing both Hawaiian roots and Black surf culture with pride and power.
