The Las Vegas Raiders are currently holding a competition for open spots in the running back room at training camp, and it looks like the position battle is still wide open.
The Las Vegas Raiders are slated to start 2025 No.6 overall pick Ashton Jeanty at running back, but the rest of the depth chart in the position room is still undecided.
Raheem Mostert, Sincere McCormick, Zamir White, and Dylan Laube are all competing for spots in the position group. According to Levi Edwards of Raiders.com, McCormick spent most of Tuesday's training camp practice with the backups, but he has far from solidified his place as the No.2 back behind Jeanty.
"The running back competition is wide open behind Ashton Jeanty. While Raheem Mostert was absent from Tuesday's practice due to the birth of his daughter, Sincere McCormick, Zamir White and Dylan Laube shared carries. While McCormick spent a large portion of the day with the second-team, there's no real indicator as to what the depth chart will look like quite yet," Edwards wrote.
Head coach Pete Carroll also gave a glowing endorsement of the running back room, and especially praised McCormick and White.
"I'm really happy with the running back group," Carroll said. "The variety of the styles that the guys have, I love. We have different kinds of makeups of guys. Zamir kind of stands alone. He's the biggest and strongest of the group and he really runs tough. ... Sincere, who didn't get a lot of play time last year, did really well when he did. And he's shown he's got a real knack, got really, really, good quick feet that are real natural to the position."
Jeanty will likely receive a bulk of the carries in Chip Kelly's offense in 2025, so Las Vegas doesn't need a game-changing No.2 running back, but someone who can change the pace and be efficient when Jeanty comes out of the game.
McCormick showed a ton of promise last year, rushing for 183 yards on 4.7 yards per carry in five games. The 24-year-old would be a solid backup to Jeanty, but the experience of Mostert and the power of White could also be valuable. Laube has an uphill battle to make the roster, but his abilities on special teams could keep him around.
Overall, backup running back doesn't need to be a strong suit for the Raiders, especially with the arrival of Jeanty. However, it's always nice to have serviceable depth at each position.
