Cowboys' contract talks with Micah Parsons have gone 'backwards' in latest Adam Schefter update

How is this possible?

The Dallas Cowboys and Micah Parsons do not appear to be in a good spot.

The pass-rushing superstar is seeking a contract extension from Dallas. The signature doesn't appear to be forthcoming, though.

The latest update from ESPN's Adam Schefter is particularly concerning. Schefter said that the Cowboys and Parsons are "further away from a deal in late July, early August than (they) were in late March, early April."

Schefter then summed things up in a way that definitely has Dallas fans concerned.

“The two sides have gone backwards, not forwards,” Schefter added. “I don’t think they’re speaking very much these days, if at all. This negotiation, when it was a negotiation, has gone sideways. It’s not a negotiation right now. There’s really no conversation about getting a deal done."

The Cowboys do have a bit of personal precedent here. Past deals for CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott took a while.

“That could change next week," Schefter said. "It could change shortly before the season. We’ve seen how long Dallas sometimes waits on some of these deals. See CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott last season.”

Parsons is currently due to play the 2025 season on his $24 million fifth-year option. He hasn't said yet that he won't, but it's a tricky spot to be in if Dallas indeed wants to keep Parsons going forward.

The former Penn State superstar has been awesome in all four of his NFL seasons, recording at least a dozen sacks in all four.

The Cowboys have a deep pass-rushing unit, which could mean two things when it comes to Parsons this season. It could have Dallas thinking it doesn't need to solve the Parsons situation right away, because they have so much other talent up front. On the flip side, getting a happy Parsons signed on to a new deal could give the Cowboys' one of the best pass rushes in football.

Negotiations can change quickly, but it is overall a bit curious that the Cowboys and Parsons haven't made progress on something that seems like it should probably be a priority.
