How did Cameron Kuchar fare in the first round of the Western Amateur?

At the Western Amateur in Skokie, Illinois, Tequesta resident Cameron Kuchar overcame a double bogey on the second hole to shoot 1-under 69 on July 29 and is tied for 37th place after the first round.

Kuchar, the son of PGA Tour veteran Matt Kuchar and a rising senior at Jupiter High School, made four birdies on his next nine holes before two late bogeys left him with the 69.

Tyler Watts of Huntsville, Alabama, leads after an 8-under 62. Frankie Harris of Boca is tied for 22nd after a 2-under 68.

John Daly II is 75th after a 71. He’s tied with Jonathan Bale of Jupiter.

The Western Amateur, first hosted in 1899, holds the distinction of the third-oldest amateur golf event in the world.

Past winners include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw and Curtis Strange.

This year's field features competition from more than 18 countries as well as Kuchar, Harris and Bale representing Palm Beach County.
