The Kansas City Royals are 52-54 and four games out of an AL Wild Card spot, but they have the talent to cause chaos as the season unfolds.

The Royals sent four players to the All-Star game this year: shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., third baseman Maikel Garcia, starting pitcher Kris Bubic, and closer Carlos Estévez. Only the Detroit Tigers (six), Seattle Mariners (five), and San Diego Padres (five) had more, and it was the first time since 2015-16 that Kansas City had four All-Stars in consecutive years.

However, the Royals' talent doesn't stop there. Starting pitcher Seth Lugo ranks 19th in baseball with a 2.95 ERA and 16th with a 1.09 WHIP across 19 outings, and he got rewarded with a two-year, $46 million contract extension on Sunday, via MLB.com's Anne Rogers.

First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino couldn't contain his excitement on social media.

"Vamooooo," he said with fire emojis. This refers to the word "vamos," which means "let's go" in Spanish.

Lugo's extension is worth $20 million each in 2026 and 2027, including a vesting option for $20 million or a club option for $17 million with a $3 million buyout, per Rogers. The deal also has a $3 million signing bonus.

Lugo owns a 63-45 career record with a 3.33 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 353 appearances, including 116 starts. The right-hander pitched for the New York Mets from 2016 to 2022 and the San Diego Padres in 2023 before signing a three-year, $45 million deal with the Royals in December 2023. That contract was set to expire at the end of this season, with a player option for 2026.

Next up for Kansas City is a bout with the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.
