In their necessary hunt for a third solid starting pitcher, the Astros could land an underrated option from the Twin Cities.
The MLB trade deadline is just a couple short days away, and though the Houston Astros has suffered injuries in just about every part of their roster, their main need by Thursday remains a No. 3 starting pitcher in the rotation behind Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez.
Not to mention, that lead at the top of the American League West is slowly witling away for team, especially after just being swept by the Athletics, and the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers are quickly approaching first place in the division.
The Astros need health in their lineup and their arms on the mound, and Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel believe that a solution is lined up for the latter.
In the tandem's top 50 trade deadline candidates, they listed the Astros as a "great fit" for an underrated starter in the league, Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan.
“The Twins don't necessarily want to move Ryan; they are more in listening mode on nearly everyone that occupies a roster spot, and with Ryan not a free agent until after the 2027 season, teams are trying, with little success thus far, to pry him away," the insiders wrote.
This trade between the two could very well go down on Thursday or before, with the Twins well out of the running in the American League Central as the Detroit Tigers continue their reign.
And adding Ryan would be a definite plus for the Astros, as the 2025 All-Star currently holds a 10-5 record with a 2.82 earned run average and 137 strikeouts in 121.1 innings pitched, just the kind of quality that would be expected if Ryan were to move down south to Space City.
