Trey Hendrickson's holdout cost Bengals star a ton of money

All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson has ended his holdout from Cincinnati Bengals training camp, but he lost a ton of money in the process.

After holding out of the first week of Cincinnati Bengals training camp, Trey Hendrickson is returning to the team.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Hendrickson plans on reporting to training camp on Wednesday despite not being any closer to a long-term extension.

Schefter also adds that Hendrickson was losing $50,000 each day by not being at camp in Cincinnati. Those fines will stop once he shows up on Wednesday.

"ESPN sources: Trey Hendrickson is planning to report to Bengals camp Wednesday, ending his holdout without being any closer to a new deal, per sources. Reporting to camp stops the $50,000 per day fines and also serves as a good-faith gesture to try to jumpstart negotiations," Schefter wrote on X.

"The NFL’s final holdout is ending."

The Bengals reported to training camp on July 22 and kicked off their first practice on July 23. That means Hendrickson missed seven days of camp and was fined $350,000 by the league.

Even if Hendrickson eventually comes to terms on a long-term extension with Cincinnati, he will be forced to pay the large fine, per NFL rule.

"Holdouts come at a hefty cost. Players are fined $50,000 for each day they hold out. Previously, teams could waive those fines. But that loophole was closed under the current collective bargaining agreement ratified in March 2020. Now, only players on rookie contracts can get that relief," ESPN's John Keim explains the rule of mandatory fines for holdouts.

As Schefter stated, Cincinnati is nowhere closer to signing Hendrickson to a new deal. The 30-year-old pass rusher has already stated that he won't play under his current deal in 2025, which has no guaranteed money.

According to Schefter, the amount of guaranteed money in the new contract is a holdup in negotiations between both sides. Hendrickson wants multiple years of guarantees, while the Bengals only want one year.

Hendrickson has posted 17.5 sacks in each of the last two seasons, so he deserves a big payday. But as of right now, the four-time Pro Bowler is staring at a massive fine from the league office and no substantial movement in contract talks with Cincinnati.
