Left-handed closing pitcher Aroldis Chapman is in his 16th major-league season after making his debut in 2010.
The 37-year-old veteran signed a one-year, $10.75 million contract with the Boston Red Sox this offseason after spending 2024 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Chapman still holds the MLB record for the fastest pitch ever thrown—105.8 mph—clocked on September 24, 2010, during his rookie season with the Cincinnati Reds, a mark that remains unbroken.
Since then, he has earned the nickname “Cuban Missile” for his blazing fastball. He has appeared in eight All-Star Games, won two World Series titles and, over 840 relief appearances, compiled a 2.56 ERA with 353 saves and 1,307 strikeouts.
In 2025, Chapman has served as Boston’s primary closer since Opening Day and enjoyed one of his most productive seasons to date.
During Sunday’s game against the Dodgers, Chapman’s velocity dipped, his four-seamer averaging 94.7 mph—well below his season average of 98.5 mph. He faced three batters before exiting, and Jordan Hicks recorded a five-out save.
Afterward, manager Alex Cora revealed Chapman left the game with a “tight back” and described him as day-to-day, indicating he will likely avoid a stint on the injured list.

That news is a relief for Boston, as Chapman has posted an exceptional 1.31 ERA over 44 appearances, saved 18 games and struck out 61 batters, showcasing the same dominant stuff he exhibited over a decade ago.
With the Red Sox sitting at 56-50 in a tightly contested postseason race, Chapman’s health and availability will be critical as they make their push for October.
