Right-handed starting pitcher Max Scherzer is in his 18th major-league season after making his MLB debut in 2008.

The 41-year-old veteran signed a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays in February after spending his last two seasons with the Texas Rangers.

Over his career, Scherzer has cemented his case as a first-ballot Hall of Fame pitcher. He’s collected three Cy Young Awards, eight All-Star selections and two World Series titles. In 463 career starts, he owns a 217–112 record, a 3.18 ERA and 3,435 strikeouts.

Scherzer has missed significant time with a right thumb injury that landed him on the 60-day injured list, limiting him to just six starts for Toronto in 2025.

After Sunday’s 10–4 loss to the Detroit Tigers, Scherzer took responsibility for surrendering a three-run homer to Gleyber Torres—the swing that ultimately earned him his first loss of the year.

He said, “That’s the inning that’s going to keep you up late and you’re going to lose sleep over that. This is the Major Leagues. You’ve got to be executing at all times.”

Despite the loss, Scherzer still delivered seven quality innings and struck out eleven batters. Manager John Schneider added via Keegan Matheson, “The Thumb-O-Meter is good right now,” referencing the injury that cost Scherzer most of the first half. Scherzer also acknowledged that his pitch count reaching 96 was a good sign.

In seven starts for Toronto, the right-hander has a 4.89 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 35 innings. As Toronto fights to remain in first place in the AL East, Scherzer will look to be a more consistent contributor down the stretch.
