Chargers All-Pro left tackle Rashawn Slater signed a contract extension Sunday afternoon that makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Slater’s deal is a four-year, $114 million extension, including $92 million guaranteed.

Slater entered the league in 2021 with many doubters questioning his potential, as his height and arm length were considered shorter than ideal for a first-round pick at tackle. However, he quickly proved them wrong, earning a second-team All-Pro selection in his rookie season.

Since entering the league, Slater has been regarded as one of the top tackles in the NFL, and this contract solidifies that reputation.

Slater had the arguably the best season of his young career in 2024, earning his second Pro Bowl selection.

Pro Football Focus supports this narrative, awarding Slater with the second-best grade in the league among tackles with a 91.1.

It's challenging to quantify the quality of offensive line play with statistics, but Slater's film demonstrates why he deserves such a lucrative contract. In the first game of the season, he consistently neutralized Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby, showcasing his exceptional speed, flexibility, and ability to anchor against one of the most formidable pass rushers in the league.

This deal comes at a great time, as Slater has been on the sidelines for Chargers’ training camp over the past week with what the team has been calling an injury, but many believe was Slater waiting on a new contract. With his new blockbuster extension, the star tackle is now expected to be on the field for the remainder of camp as the Bolts gear up for the 2025 season.
