The Kansas City Chiefs brought referees to training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday, and it was not long until the yellow flags started flying as the team practiced in pads for the first time.
Mahomes frustrated at Chiefs training camp
Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes grew visibly "pretty frustrated" with his Chiefs teammates as a lack of discipline resulted in several procedure penalties during team drills, per Tucker D. Franklin of KC Sports Network.
Entering training camp, there was plenty of focus on the Chiefs' need to improve their offensive line in front of two-time NFL MVP Mahomes, who was sacked a career-high 36 times in 2024.
At the end of the first week of camp, it appears that the new faces in the group are still experiencing growing pains while head coach Andy Reid looks for solutions.
Changes on the Chiefs' offensive line
The Chiefs return three offensive line starters ahead of the 2025 NFL season:
- Right tackle Jawaan Taylor
- Right guard Trey Smith
- Center Creed Humphrey
In the offseason, Kansas City invested heavily to improve the position group. They made Smith the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in NFL history with a four-year, $94 million contract extension.
They also signed former San Francisco 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal in free agency.

Questions remain on the left side of the line, where Reid has to find a way to protect Mahomes' blind side better in 2025.
Moore is expected to compete for the left tackle position with 2025 first-round draft pick Josh Simmons from the Ohio State Buckeyes, whom Reid called a "work in progress" on Sunday.
The left guard position is also up in the air after Joe Thuney was traded to the Chicago Bears in the offseason.
Meaningful reps coming as Chiefs preseason approaches
Sunday's flag-fest came as Moore rotated with Taylor in the right tackle spot, another wrinkle as Reid seeks to find the best alignment in front of Mahomes.

"I think they've done a great job so far," Mahomes said of his linemen on NFL Network. "Competition breeds excellence. ... These guys are going to get tested. Coach Reid is going to throw them into the fire. We'll see who comes out the best man."
The presence of the officials at camp added some game-like pressure for the Chiefs in training camp, but the real deal will be here soon enough.
Reid will get a chance to evaluate his team in game action on Aug. 9 when they face the Arizona Cardinals in their first preseason game.
