Jomboy Media has been one of the more unique success stories in the sports broadcasting, media landscape. Founded in 2017 by Jimmy O'Brien and Jake Storiale, what started as a New York Yankees podcast, has turned into a powerhouse in the baseball world with Major League Baseball acquiring a stake in the company.
While Jomboy Media has been a relative success, obtaining direct access to Yankees manager, Aaron Boone for weekly conversations, the online, social media response to Jomboy's duo of O'Brien and Storiale has been overwhelmingly positive -- until this week.
On Wednesday, with the Yankees taking on the Toronto Blue Jays, Jomboy Media producer, Dan Rourke hurled verbally abusive language in the direction of George Springer. Rourke, on his "Yankees Avenue" livestream of the game said, "(Expletive) you, Springer, kill yourself. Piece of (expletive)."
Springer was simply crossing home plate, putting the Blue Jays up 4-2 in the fifth inning of a game they would go on to win 8-4.
While "Yankees Avenue" isn't affiliated with Jomboy Media, Rourke is employed as a producer for the company. O'Brien addressed Rourke's actions later in the week, but the baseball world still awaits a response from MLB.
O'Brien began his statement by acknowledging Rourke's actions and expressing hope that his employee will apologize for his actions.
“Dan Rourke does his livestream for Yanks Avenue, and said some stuff you can’t say. He was feeling awful, and I think he’s going to apologize and all of that,” O'Brien said.
O'Brien continued by attempting to explain Rourke's livestream mentality, however, he also reiterated how terrible Rourke's words were.
“He grew up in gaming culture, young kid culture, you talk (expletive) during livestreams. That’s no excuse to tell a player to go kill yourself. Joking, not joking, obviously you can’t say that and it’s terrible, and there might be ramifications from it,” O'Brien continued.
O'Brien's closing comments also recognized that MLB will have the ultimate say in this situation and Jomboy may have no other recourse but to cut ties with Rourke completely.
“The league might call us and say, ‘Hey, he’s not allowed here,’” O’Brien said.
Rourke also addressed the situation during his Friday livestream, apologizing for his actions from Wednesday.
However this situation plays out, it sounds like O'Brien and Jomboy Media aren't planning on disciplining Rourke internally, rather waiting to see if MLB will be dropping the hammer.
Either way, the baseball world awaits the MLB's response.
