The New York Yankees were looking at a potentially devastating injury for star Aaron Judge, but now it appears that the team may have avoided the worst. The team announced late on Saturday that Judge would be headed to the 10-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow, putting to rest fears that he may have suffered damage in his ulnar collateral ligament.
The worst-case scenario would have been Tommy John surgery, but instead Judge is expected back as the designated hitter sometime in early August.
Boone said Judge will likely return after his 10-day stint comes to an end, though he won't be throwing a baseball immediately and will stick to DH at first.
"All in all, we got good news today," Boone said. "I think all of us kind of feared the worst."
Judge added that he is relieved the injury wasn't more severe.
"I never had any really elbow issues or anything like that," Judge said. "You never know what you're kind of getting into, but I'm glad it's just it is what it is."
Judge is in the midst of an MVP-caliber season for the Yankees, leading the MLB batting average (.342) and OPS (1.160). Judge has added 37 home runs and 85 RBIs, second-best in the majors.
The Yankees have dropped three games in a row and seven out of their last 10, falling 6.5 games behind the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
