One ESPN analyst believes Shedeur Sanders has a Tim Tebow ceiling and an unemployed-in-five-years floor.
It's been two months since Shedeur Sanders shockingly fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft, and even a pair of speeding tickets and a four-way quarterback competition have yet to subside the hype around the Colorado product.
The 23-year-old is firmly at the bottom of the Cleveland Browns' current QB depth chart, but there's endless optimism from members of the media that he'll be able to separate himself from the other candidates this summer.
So far in training camp, that's yet to happen, as Shedeur is the only Browns signal-caller yet to take snaps with the first-team offense.
Despite his shaky standing, one former Super Bowl champion suggested Shedeur's star power could be hurting his standing within his team.
On a recent episode of ESPN's "Unsportsmanlike," former defensive end Chris Canty explained why Shedeur might be too prominent a figure to sit on the sidelines.
"Tim Tebow cast such a shadow that teams didn't want to bring him in because it was distracting for coaches and whoever the incumbent starter was," Canty said. "There's a tremendous amount of pressure on Shedeur, and a lot of it is unfair to be able to assert himself as a starter on a truncated timetable. He's either going to do that or will be out of the league in five years."
Shedeur crafted this reality for himself. He possesses an eccentric personality that commands the spotlight and has shown, on numerous occasions, a complete lack of self-awareness.
Shedeur would always have to prove himself because of who his father is, but he exacerbated these issues by being immature and having too many flaws in his game to excuse his off-the-field blunders.
With Kenny Pickett dealing with a hamstring injury, this is the time for Shedeur to step up and prove he belongs in the league.
No more excuses.
