Mariners pivoting away from Eugenio Suarez for different trade priority

Seattle needs bullpen help.

The Seattle Mariners aren't exiting the Eugenio Suarez trade conversation.

They are pivoting, though.

The Seattle Times' Adam Jude reports that Suarez isn't the Mariners' top priority as the MLB trade deadline approaches.

Now, Seattle is going after bullpen help.

"As trade talks are expected to escalate in the next 24 hours, source say the more urgent need for the Mariners is a proven late-inning relief pitcher," Jude wrote on Monday. "And because of the various bullpen options available in the market, there’s a growing optimism around the club that a deal will come together before Thursday’s deadline."

The Mariners have already acquired one bat from the Diamondbacks, first baseman Josh Naylor. That could be enough to improve the lineup if a Suarez deal doesn't happen.

"The asking price the Diamondbacks have reportedly put on Suarez is steep enough that some clubs in the third-base market have pivoted elsewhere," writes Jude, then references the Yankees' trade for Ryan McMahon from Colorado instead.

Jude goes on to name Minnesota Twins star relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax as favored targets.

He also links the Mariners to the Pirates, who have David Bednar and Dennis Santana conceptually available for trades.

It sounds like the Mariners are definitely going to make a deal or more before the deadline. But if one of them is Suarez, it may only come after ensuring the bullpen has been shored up.
