Josh Metellus will continue to wear the purple and gold for years to come. The Minnesota Vikings' safety entered the offseason with questions looming about his future with the franchise.

But the wait is finally over. Metellus has inked an extension with the Vikings, the franchise announced on Saturday. Per Adam Schefter, the 27-year-old has signed a three-year contract worth $36 million, with $25 million in guaranteed money and a maximum value of $42 million.

It has been a tough offseason for the former sixth-round pick until now. He was a limited participant in voluntary OTAs and sat out some drills in the mandatory minicamp. There were some positive updates from the management and the player ahead of the training camp, but fans were still concerned about the versatile safety.

The Vikings sealed the deal by making the extension official. The star safety shared a three-word reaction to the deal via his X(formerly Twitter) handle.

"God is great 🙏🏾," he wrote.

Metellus also addressed the media following the announcement, thanking God, his family, and everybody who has helped him in his journey.

"The city of Minnesota, I'm here, baby. I love it here, and it's great to be here to see you guys and to further this relationship," he said. "This place is home for me, and to be able to have the story I had and the way I came up, the way I was brought, you know, young kid from North Miami Beach and to be here now standing in front of you guys and showing that hard work do pays off."

The Vikings safety was always confident about his future in Minnesota and was sure that the extension would happen sooner or later.

"I don't like to get into the positions. I just think I'm a damn good football player," he said when asked about his versatility.

Two summers ago, the Vikings locked up Metellus with a two-year, $8 million extension. They hoped he’d take on a bigger role right away in Brian Flores’ first season.

He didn’t just live up to that. He took it even further. After starting only three games in his first three years as a sixth-round pick back in 2020, Metellus has now started 27 games over the past two seasons. He’s hit more than 1,000 defensive snaps each year since Flores arrived.

Flores’ defense is all about versatility and moving guys around the field. That’s where Metellus shines. He’s become a true difference-maker, lining up at more than a dozen spots. Whether it’s covering guys or rushing the passer, he’s probably the most versatile player the Vikings have on defense.
