Who are the top Michigan high school football players at each position entering 2025?

With high school football just around the corner, get a look at the top seniors and juniors taking the field from Michigan in the 2025 season.

We’re right on the doorstep of another high school football season in Michigan.

With that comes a whole new crop of athletes ready to make a name for themselves and peak the interest of collegiate programs.

While Michigan isn’t often up there with the likes of Florida, Texas or California for recruiting, the state does hold its own within the second tier of states like Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Louisiana.

Within the 2026 and 2027 classes, some athletes have already more than made a name for themselves and even committed to top level programs.

In fact, of the top 30 recruits in the 2026 Class in Michigan – according to 247Sports’ composite rankings – only two have yet to commit to a program.

So, who are those top players entering the 2025 season? We’ll take a look at each positon below. All rankings mentioned come from 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2026 and 2027 classes.

Saline quarterback Tommy Carr looks to pass against Belleville during the first half of district final at Belleville High School in Belleville on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

OFFENSE

Quarterback

There’s two pretty clear choices for the top quarterback in the state of Michigan entering the season, with those being East Kentwood’s Kayd Coffman and Saline’s Tommy Carr. Coffman committed to Michigan State as the No. 25 QB and a four-star recruit. He didn’t put up gaudy numbers with just 1,600 yards and 12 TDs, but the talent is there.

Carr is the brother of Notre Dame QB CJ Carr and grandson of former Michigan coach, Lloyd Carr. Committed to Miami (OH), Carr had a number of MAC offers and chose the Redhawks over the likes of Iowa State, Rutgers and Wake Forest.

While the list basically consists of 2026 and 2027 athletes, Cass Tech's Donald Tabron II of the 2028 Class already holds offers from Auburn, Michigan, Miami (Fla.), Oregon and more. Others: Jaxson Dosh, Davison (Western Michigan).

Running Back

The state’s top running back grew up right in the backyard of Michigan State, but Haslett’s Kory Amachree will be a Kansas Jayhawk at the next level. Big (6-foot, 195 pounds) and fast, Amachree ran for just over 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns in just six games before a season-ending injury a year ago. He picked the Kansas over the likes of MSU, Oklahoma, Duke, Pittsburgh and others.

Oscar Carlson running back Izaiah Wright is also rated as the No. 54 RB and committed to Purdue. Others: Michael Dukes, Detroit King (Rutgers); Donovan Triplett, Walled Lake Western (Western Michigan); Jayden Terry, Grandville.

Wide Receiver

For the top pass catcher in the state, you have to go to the Class of 2027. Harper Woods wideout Dakota Guerrant is one of the top players in that class, let alone the state. The No. 8 WR and 41 overall in ’27, Guerrant had 1,600 all-purpose yards and 23 TD last season, including 670 receiving. He’s pulled in every offer, including from Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, MSU, Notre Dame, USC and more.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s junior Chad Willis is another underclassmen with over 20 offers, while Samson Gash from Detroit Catholic Central the 2026 Class is the top senior. Gash had 731 yards and 12 TDs in an all-state junior campaign . He also set a new 100 meter dash record for the state as a champion in 10.41. He’s committed to MSU as the No. 63 WR. Others: Angelo Chapman, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

Detroit Catholic Central's Samson Gash carries the ball during the Division 1 football district final on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

Tight End

You’re always going to find tight ends in this state and it’s no different this year. Saline’s Lincoln Keyes is rated the No. 13 TE in 2026 and committed to Georgia. He’s 6-foot-6, 245 pounds and had 821 yards and eight TDs as a junior.

Port Huron Northern’s Lincoln Watkins is also committed to Kentucky and Jack Janda of Detroit Catholic Central is heading to Wisconsin.

The Class of 2027 also includes four-star recruits Anthony Cartwright from Detroit Country Day and Holden Niemi of Dexter. Both hold Alabama and Michigan offers. Others: Charlie Jilek, Portage Central (UCF); Ryan Rocheleau, Lake Orion (Western Michigan); Brady Shelton, Brighton (Eastern Michigan).

Offensive Line

Notre Dame ripped through the state’s offensive line list and pulled in three top level commits. Davison’s Ben Nichols, Portage Northern’s Gregory Patrick and Allegan’s Sullivan Garvin will all be Irish at the next level. They’re all four-star recruits from 2026, with Nichols and Garvin projecting on the inside and Patrick as a tackle.

Cass Tech’s Khalief Canty is also committed to Missouri and Detroit Catholic Central’s Ben Eziuka is heading to Penn State. Michigan State also pulled in North Branch senior Eli Bickel, all of 6-foot-6, 270. Others: Dewey Young, Kalamazoo Central (2027); Owen Winder, Dexter (Iowa State); Travis Robertson, West Bloomfield (Bowling Green); Tristan Comer, Freeland (MSU).

DEFENSE

Defensive Line

You’ll find the top defensive lineman in the Class of 2027 in Muskegon. Recarder Kitchen has five-star potential and is currently the No. 14 edge and 103 player overall in ’27. He’s 6-foot-6, 240 pounds with 20 offers and climbing. He’s made trips to the likes of Michigan, MSU, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Penn State and others already.

West Bloomfield’s Jeremiah Benson is also committed to Minnesota out of the 2026 Class and Saline’s Isaiah Harris is heading to Miami (OH). Cincinnati commit Jeremiah Gray from Detroit Central is also a monster (6-foot-7) and Jameer Henry from the 2027 Class and Detroit King holds over 20 offers. Others: Max Baker, Detroit Edison (Western Michigan); Ryan Harrington, OLSM (Wake Forest);

Linebacker

The thinnest position in the state might be linebacker ahead, but Cass Tech’s Marcus Jennings helped bring the program a Division 1 state title last season and is committed to Pittsburgh as the No. 54 LB. He racked up over 120 tackles, with five sacks and two interceptions.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Brayden Sweeney is also committed to Purdue. Hartland’s Jack Lansing III has flown under the radar some, though jumped at an MSU offer and committed in June. Toledo also got commitments from Dexter’s Nathan Gersh and Cass Tech’s BJ Stovall. Others: Brody Sink, Pontiac ND Prep (Miami OH); Anthony Bitonti, DeLaSalle (Princeton).

Detroit Cass Tech WR Corey Sadler Jr. catches a touchdown pass, while being covered by Hudsonville Ty Ykema in the second quarter, during the MHSAA Division 1 football finals at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024.

Defensive Back

Two of the top football players in Michigan don’t exactly have a solid positon. Corey Sadler Jr. is the unquestioned top recruit in the state. The Cass Tech senior holds close to 40 offers and is the No. 7 rated athlete in the country. He likely fits at DB at the next level though caught 51 passes for 1,043 yards and 14 TDs last season. He made 55 tackles and four interceptions defensively. He’s said to be leaning North Carolina, Colorado or Maryland, with recent visits to all.

The other top athlete that’ll be a DB is Dearborn Divine Child senior Marcello Vitti, who is committed to Iowa. Vitti is big (6-foot, 180) and projects as a safety at the next level.

Sterling Heights Stevenson senior Ronnie Hill is also heading to Iowa, then Catholic Central’s Gideon Gash (Brother of Samson) of the 2027 Class is a 6-foot-4 four-star corner with MSU and Michigan offers. Others: Jaidon Windom, Detroit King (Cincinnati); Traverse Moore, DeWitt (CMU); Drew Esper, Traverse City West (CMU).
