Quarterback Sam Horn has signed with the Dodgers. Here’s what that means for Missouri football

Missouri football QB Sam Horn has signed with the MLB's Dodgers. That, however, should not impact his availability for Missouri football this year.

Missouri quarterback and right-handed pitcher Sam Horn has signed a professional contract in the MLB.

Importantly, that does not immediately impact his future with Missouri football.

Horn, one of the competing players for Missouri’s starting quarterback position this fall, has signed an above-slot contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers worth $497,500, per a report from Jim Callis of MLB.com on Saturday night.

Earlier this month, Horn was selected with the No. 525-overall pick in the 17th round of the MLB Draft. He had until 4 p.m. Monday to sign a professional contract.

He has done just that, and the move indicates that his long-term future will be in professional baseball.

The expectation is that Horn will remain and compete with Missouri football for the starting quarterback job this upcoming fall. It does likely mean, however, that he has played his final game for Missouri baseball.

On Sunday, when Mizzou players reported for fall camp, Horn indicated to the Tribune that he is still fully invested in the competition to become the Tigers’ starting quarterback.

“The baseball process with the draft was cool,” Horn told the Tribune when players reported for camp Sunday. “It's always a great experience, no matter what, talking to teams and hearing what they have to say. But no, I think it's been crazy, but now we're in fall camp, and so it's kind of like everything's calm, in a way. But then you get back to fall camp, it's go time.”

Most players who sign professional contracts will join their respective organizations in the new year, reporting to spring training complexes in January or February. That means that Horn can remain with Mizzou football through the end of this season.

The likeliest path forward, however, is that this is his final season with Eli Drinkwitz’s program.

Horn, a 6-foot-4 righty who has touched 98 mph with his fastball, has eligibility through the 2026 season, if he wants it. He sat out the 2024 football season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and has only pitched 15 innings over three seasons with Kerrick Jackson’s baseball team.

But the over-slot deal indicates the Dodgers want him to join the organization, and signing the contract suggests this may be Horn’s final few months on campus. According to Sunday's reports, $347,500 of Horn's deal will count against the Dodgers' pool.

He will compete for the Tigers’ starting quarterback job with Beau Pribula in fall camp. Drinkwitz said Sunday that they are going to split the reps “as close to 50-50 as possible” through the first week and scrimmage of camp.
