Major League Soccer (MLS) wants to help bringing former Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller into the league, Germany's Bild paper reported on Monday.
According to the report, MLS bosses want to push for a deal between the Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Cincinnati because they fear that the transfer would otherwise fail and that they will lose a potential figurehead for the league.
Negotiations between Müller and the Canadian team are said to be down to the final details.
However, according to MLS rules, the Whitecaps would have to formally purchase the rights to sign Müller from league rivals Cincinnati. Under the MLS' Discovery Rights system, Cincinnati holds the right of first refusal for the German veteran and 2014 World Cup winner.
Each franchise can place up to seven players on its discovery list, which are often not made public.
However, teams can trade or sell Discovery Rights to a player if the holding club cannot reach a deal.
According to reports, Müller doesn't want to move to Cincinnati.
Bild said that the team from Ohio wants more than $400,000 to transfer Müller's Discovery Rights to another team.
The sum could be an issue for Vancouver, as their sporting director Axel Schuster said recently that signing Müller seemed rather unrealistic for the club.
None of the clubs nor the player have commented on the reports.
Müller left Bayern this summer after 25 years of service as he didn't receive a new contract from the German record champions.
On Saturday, he hinted at a move to the MLS in a cowboy-themed video in which he rides a horse on what appears to be an open plain.
